Our first trip in China was to Beihai. A city about 2.5 hours by bus south of Nanning on the Gulf of Tonkin. We jumped on a bus and headed for the beach. We arrived late on Friday night and had already had a hotel picked out on the bay side of the city. After the tax driver took us a couple of places, we convinced him to take us to our hotel. The hotel was nice, although we had to sleep in seperate twin beds! On Saturday, we spent all day at Silver Beach. A beautiful white beach filled with Chinese swimming, shops, places to sit and explore. We walked up and down the beach all day, enjoying the sun and the quiet and peaceful breeze. Most of the restaurants were seafood and were weren't feeling adventurous, so we went to a chicken fast food restaurant for lunch and dinner and ate Western Style! We watched the sunset and then went back to the hotel a little sunburned. On Sunday morning we got up and went to an island spit of restaurants with a view of the bay. We randomly selected a restaurant and, after pointing and picking, wound up with a decent meal. Check out the food blog for more! Here are some pics from our weekend:
Silver Beach. The 'number one' beach in Guangxi.
Kealy and her new blue umbrella. It kept the sun off of her beautiful white skin! The boats behind her were used for fishing.
The Chinese definitely knew how relax at the beach. There were jet skis, boats, volleyball and these tables set up to sit under.
Ah! Nothing like palm trees and white sandy beaches.
The Coconut Milk was a little warm, but authentic nonetheless!
This is supposed to say "Western Style Restaurant". Some English not so good.
This was the largest spider we have ever seen! Its web was between two trees. Probably six inches across in body. WOW!
This morning we explored a wharf with restaurants and tried a meal there.
We had a great time on our first trip in China. We are working through the communication barrier and we are learning tips as we go, like packing less so I don't have to carry the bags on my sunburnt shoulders. It is a work in progress but we had a very relaxing weekend.
Sincerely,
Ryan and Kealy Thorson
